Loyola Men’s Lacrosse names Four Seniors 2013 Captains

No Comments 27 November 2012

BALTIMORE – Four seniors – defender Reid Acton, midfielder Davis Butts, long-stick midfielder Scott Ratliff and attacker Mike Sawyer – were named team captains for the 2013 Loyola University Maryland men’s lacrosse team, Head Coach Charley Toomey announced.

“We are excited about these young men leading our program,” Toomey said. “They have had outstanding careers at Loyola, and we feel great about them leading the team into the 2013 season.”

All four earned All-America honors form the United State Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association last season during the Greyhounds’ run to the NCAA Championship. Sawyer was a second-team honoree, while Ratliff earned third-team laurels. Both Acton and Butts received honorable mention.

Acton will enter 2013 having started on the Greyhounds’ defense each of the last three years. He finished the 2012 season with 44 ground balls and 20 caused turnovers, while helping Loyola record a 7.21 goals allowed per game average, the fifth-best mark in Division I. The Greyhounds set a pair of defensive records during Championship Weekend, holding Notre Dame and Maryland to a combined eight goals in the two games and allowing the Terrapins just three in the title match.

Butts was a first-line midfielder for the Greyhounds for the second year in a row. He excelled as a dodger and finisher and ranked fourth on the team in points (35) and third in goals scored (21). A versatile player, Butts also saw plenty of action on the wings of faceoffs and in the defensive midfield where he picked up 40 ground balls.

Ratliff continued to be one of the top long-stick midfielders in the nation and set a Loyola scoring record for the position last year. He finished with 12 goals and seven assists, exceeding current Loyola Assistant Coach Matt Dwan’sprevious record for a long-stick midfielder set in 1995. In addition to his scoring, he tallied 88 ground balls and 37 caused turnovers while earning ECAC Defensive Player of the Year, ECAC Championships Most Valuable Player, NCAA All-Tournament Team and team co-defenisve player of the year honors.

Sawyer was a finalist for the Tewaaraton Award as the nation’s top player last season when he scored 52 goals and assisted on 10 more and was named the team’s Offensive Most Valuable Player. During the regular-season, he led the ECAC in goals and goals per game while earning All-ECAC First Team honors. He became the second player to score 50 or more goals in a season and was joined by a third on last year’s team.

After a trio of exhibition games, the Greyhounds will open their 2013 season on Saturday, February 16, at Delaware.

Florida Tech Announces 2013 Men’s Lacrosse Schedule

No Comments 27 November 2012

MELBOURNE, Fla. (Men’s Lacrosse) – With the men’s lacrosse team preparing for its second season, Florida Tech head coach Ryan McAleavey released his 2013 schedule on Tuesday. The Panthers will play nine of their 14 games and three of their seven Deep South Conference games at their home field, Melbourne Central Catholic’s Hustler Stadium.

“If you were to sum it up in one word, excitement,” McAleavey said of moving toward the second season of the program. “We have 17 new faces on the team, and come spring time we will have a roster of 34 players. That is 11 more kids than we had last year.”

After opening the fall season with a second consecutive sweep of its annual Battle at the Beach Tournament, Florida Tech looks to build on its 2012 inaugural season with three-straight DSC games to open 2013. The Panthers will open the 2013 campaign on the road at Saint Leo on Feb. 12 at 7 p.m. Four days later, on Feb. 16, FIT will play host to Rollins College in its home opener at 7 p.m. The Panthers will then travel to Tampa on Feb. 20 before starting a five-game non-conference homestand.

“It is typical down here in Florida,” McAleavey said of beginning the season with three-straight conference opponents. “This is something that will likely change the following season when we join the Sunshine State Conference. I was talking with another conference coach, and we agree that we want to schedule the conference games towards the end of the year when we are at our best.”

From Feb. 23 to March 12, FIT will host Lindenwood (2/23), Coker (3/1), Belmont-Abbey (3/6), Mount Olive (3/9) and Molloy (3/12) on its home turf. The contest against Lindenwood is scheduled for 2 p.m., while the ladder four games are all set to begin at 7 p.m.

“We have nine home games,” McAleavey said. “A lot of the teams are coming down during their spring break: Molloy, MIT and Belmont-Abbey. We are lucky to be in Florida, because of the warm weather everyone wants to come down. We can benefit from that.

“Molloy is a strong team and will likely finish the season in the top-10, and Lindenwood is a team out of Missouri that is on the rise. We beat Coker last year, and lost a close game to Belmont-Abbey.”

On March 15, the Panthers will travel to Salisbury, N.C. to take on DSC foe Catawba. Two days later, FIT will trek to Wingate for its final conference road game of the regular season.

FIT will then host Lenoir-Rhyne on March 22 and Florida Southern on April 3 to close out conference play. In between those two games, the Panthers will host Massachusetts Institute of Technology on Friday, March 20 at 5 p.m.

“We are planning a barbecue after the game with MIT,” McAleavey said. “With the similarities between the two schools, we feel it is a good opportunity to bring future engineers together. Our president Dr. Anthony J. Catanese is all for it and will also be involved with the festivities.”

More information about the festivities surrounding the contest with MIT will be released at a later date.

The DSC Tournament is schedule to run from April 9-14, 2013 this season. FIT scheduled a final regular season contest with Young Harris at Bolles School in Jacksonville on April 21.

“The one thing that really stands out to me about this team is their work ethic,” McAleavey said of his 2013 squad. “How fast they came together as a team and how well they work together has been great. If we can build off that, I think it is going to be fun to coach and fun to see.”

Northwestern Wildcats release 2013 Women’s Lacrosse Schedule

No Comments 26 November 2012

EVANSTON, Ill. — Ready to defend an NCAA championship for the seventh time in eight seasons, head coach Kelly Amonte Hiller and Northwestern Lacrosse announced today (Nov. 26) NU’s regular-season schedule for the upcoming 2013 campaign. The slate features 10 matchups with NCAA Tournament teams from a year ago and seven home dates at Lakeside Field, including a March 30 rematch of last season’s national title game against Syracuse.

Amonte Hiller, a five-time national coach of the year with a career coaching mark of 196-30, is looking to steer the Wildcats to an NCAA-record ninth consecutive trip to championship weekend next May.

“Our program has worked extremely hard this fall in preparation for next spring and we’re excited about the potential of this team,” Amonte Hiller said. “We have nothing but quality opponents on our schedule for 2013 so it’s important for us to focus on improving every game throughout the season. As always, we had amazing support from our fans at Lakeside Field last year and we can’t wait to be back in front of them again beginning March 6.”

For the second straight year, Northwestern will gear up for the regular season with a January trip to the Champion Challenge, hosted by U.S. Lacrosse at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Florida. The ‘Cats will face Team England on Jan. 26 before facing off with the world’s best players — and several former NU standouts — representing the U.S. National Team in a game that will air live on ESPNU.

Northwestern’s first two tests of the regular season will both pit Amonte Hiller against her former pupils, beginning Feb. 8 when NU heads to Los Angeles to battle a UMass team led by 2004 NU alum Angela McMahon. The next day, the Wildcats will help usher in a new era of women’s lacrosse when they play Southern Cal in USC’s inaugural game at the varsity level. The Trojans are led by two familiar faces in former Northwestern All-American and four-year member of the NU coaching staff Lindsey Munday, as well as Wildcat great and USC assistant coach Hilary Bowen.

A road trip to North Carolina and Vanderbilt precedes Northwestern’s 2013 home opener, a March 6 date against another former member of Amonte Hiller’s coaching staff, Acacia Walker’s Boston College squad.

The Wildcats begin a run of six home games in seven outings on March 16, a stretch that includes back-to-back nationally televised games on the Big Ten Network against conference foe Ohio State (March 27) and last year’s national runner-up, Syracuse (March 30).

NU then battles a pair of ACC opponents when it travels to Virginia and hosts Duke in early April and, after hosting Stanford, the ‘Cats go away from Lakeside Field for road matchups with strong Florida and Notre Dame sides. Northwestern’s seven seniors will celebrate Senior Day against Penn on April 27 before leading NU into the postseason at the American Lacrosse Conference Tournament hosted by Johns Hopkins (May 2-5).

The newly expanded NCAA Women’s Lacrosse Tournament — which for the first time in 2013 will see 26 teams go dancing, up from 16 — begins on the weekend of May 11-12 at regional host sites. After two years on Long Island, the national semifinals (May 24) and championship game (May 26) will this season move south down I-95 to the campus of Villanova University in Philadelphia.

Information regarding season ticket packages to Northwestern Lacrosse home games will be available early in January, 2013.
