New Women’s DI Lacrosse Program: Central Michigan University in 2015

No Comments 07 December 2012

The Central Michigan University Board of Trustees approved women’s golf and lacrosse as the university’s two newest varsity-level sports on Thursday, December 6th.

Golf will begin play in the 2014-2015 academic year, while lacrosse will take the field in 2015-2016. The last time CMU added a Division I sport was in 1998 with women’s soccer.

Adding the new sports is going to cost the athletics department $964,148 over the next three years. Half of the budget will consist of scholarships for both sports. Golf will receive six scholarships, while lacrosse will receive 12.

The hiring of a lacrosse coach should occur by 2014.

LaxDaily has learned that while eight women’s sports up for consideration, golf and lacrosse were ultimately picked because they are considered ‘Michigan sports’ and have become popular in the state.

Detroit Mercy Titans Release 2013 Men’s Lacrosse Schedule

No Comments 21 November 2012

DETROIT (11/20/12) — Games against regional foes Michigan and Ohio State as well as a trip to Annapolis, Md., to face Navy highlight the schedule for the Titans as head coach Matt Holtz announced the 2013 men’s lacrosse schedule.

“We are extremely happy with our schedule,” said Coach Holtz, who is entering his fifth year at UDM. “The non-conference schedule will be a tough test, but it will help us get ready for the grueling MAAC schedule.”

The Titans will open the season in Columbus, Ohio, on Feb. 9 as Detroit takes on Ohio State for the fifth-straight year. The game will most likely be indoors at the Woody Hayes Athletics Center as UDM looks for its’ first-ever win over the Buckeyes.

The following week (Feb. 15), the Titans will visit one of the most storied programs in the world of sports when they travel to Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium to take on the Naval Academy in the first career meeting between the red, white and blue and the Midshipmen.

A game at Robert Morris on Feb. 23 will end a three-game road swing to begin the season as the Titans open the home campaign against Quinnipiac on Mar. 2.

Other home games for the Titans include three MAAC contests in VMI (Mar. 23), Manhattan (Apr. 6) and Senior Day against Canisius on Apr. 27.

Other non-conference road games will have Detroit at Bellarmine (Mar. 5) and at first-year program Marquette (Apr. 20), but one of the bigger games will be when the Titans square off against the Wolverines in the “Big House” on Apr. 17.  Last year, 1800 fans came out to Ultimate Soccer Arenas in Pontiac to see the contest between UDM and Michigan, with Detroit posting a 13-9 victory.

The rest of the conference road docket will feature Detroit at two teams that made the MAAC Tournament a year ago in Marist (Mar. 16) and Siena (Apr. 13) as well as getting on a plane for a match-up at Jacksonville (Mar. 30).

The 2013 MAAC Championship will be held at Canisius – the site of the Titans reaching the 2011 championship game – from May 3-5 as the top four seeds will once again battle it out for the automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament.

Detroit returns 35 members from last year’s squad that went 6-9, including tying for second in the conference at 3-3. UDM earned the No. 2 seed in the MAAC Championship, falling in the semifinals to eventual conference tournament champion Canisius.

Michigan Men’s Lacrosse announces 2013 Schedule

No Comments 08 November 2012

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — The University of Michigan men’s lacrosse team’s 2013 schedule, announced Thursday (Nov. 8), features the Battle at the Big House vs. Ohio State on April 13 as well as the first night lacrosse game in Michigan Stadium history, against Detroit on April 17 at 7 p.m.

In total, U-M will host six home games, five of which will be held in Michigan Stadium. The first home game of the season will pit the Wolverines against Penn State on Feb. 9 in Oosterbaan Field House. The game will count toward the Creator’s Trophy, an annual award among U-M, PSU and Ohio State, the three Big Ten Conference schools that sponsor men’s lacrosse.

“We’re excited to host Penn State in our season opener and welcome back Ohio State for the Battle at the Big House again as part of football’s spring game weekend,” said Michigan head coach John Paul. “The Creator’s Trophy adds to the rivalries we’re building with those two programs.”

The 2013 season also will mark Michigan’s first season as a full-fledged member of the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC). The Wolverines will play a seven-game conference schedule, with home games against Loyola (Md.), Air Force and Ohio State and road contests at Bellarmine, Hobart, Fairfield and Denver. The top four teams in the conference standings will qualify for the ECAC Tournament, to be hosted by Hobart April 3-5 in Geneva, N.Y.

Michigan’s first ECAC game, at Bellarmine on Feb. 16 in Louisville, Ky., kicks off a stretch of seven straight road games. The road swing also features a matchup against perennial power Johns Hopkins on Feb. 23 in Baltimore, Md., as well as a clash against Army on March 2 at the historic Sun Life Stadium Orange Bowl Classic in Miami, Fla.

The road swing concludes with the Wolverines taking on Colgate on March 17 in a matchup that will be played at Citi Field, home of the New York Mets, in Flushing, N.Y.

“Playing Johns Hopkins at historic Homewood Field is a big road matchup for us. The Army game at Sun Life Stadium in Miami and the Colgate game at Citi Field in New York give us great opportunities to play excellent programs in professional stadiums in front of Michigan fans and alums in Florida and the tri-state area,” said Paul.

The Wolverines will return home to play Loyola, the 2012 national champion, on March 3, followed by a game against Air Force on March 30. After an April 6 game against Delaware in Newark, Del., the Wolverines will begin a three-game homestand, including the Battle at the Big House vs. Ohio State (April 13), the night game against Detroit (April 17), and a matchup against St. Joseph’s (April 20).

Michigan will conclude the regular season with a visit to Denver on April 27.

“Our 2013 schedule is certainly as challenging as last year’s,” said Paul. “The ECAC is as tough as ever, and we have some very special non-conference games on top of that.”
