Colgate Men’s Lacrosse annouces 2013 Captains

HAMILTON – Colgate head coach Mike Murphy announced Tuesday the selection of three captains to lead the 2013 Raiders.

The team elected seniors Peter Baum and James Queeney, and junior Jimmy Ryan.

“Historically they’ve always had three captains here, so we’ve kept that tradition going,” Murphy said. “The guys vote on it, and I’m very excited for the three they picked.

“Being voted captain by your peers is the biggest compliment in sports.”

Queeney is a repeat captain for the Raiders, who last year finished 14-4 and advanced to the NCAA quarterfinals for the first time in program history. Baum and Ryan are serving as captains for the first time.

Baum won both the Tewaaraton and Lt. Raymond J. Enners awards as the nation’s top lacrosse player after leading the country with 5.39 points and 3.72 goals per game. Baum scored 97 points on 67 goals and 30 assists to earn Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year, in addition to being a member of the Academic All-Patriot League Team.

“Peter’s career obviously speaks for itself, but what a lot of people don’t realize is what a great leader he is both on and off the field in terms of rallying the guys on the things we need to do in the community and the classroom,” Murphy said.

Defensive Stalwart
Queeney was a force defensively for the Raiders. He started every game for the second year in a row, collecting 29 groundballs and causing nine turnovers in 2012. He earned a spot on the Capital One Academic All-America Men’s At-Large Third Team along with Academic All-Patriot League honors.

“He’s a great defender who already has been a two-year starter,” Murphy said. “He was a great anchor last year for two young guys in Kevin Boyle and Bobby Lawrence on the defensive end. Now he’s come back in unbelievable shape and is playing his best lacrosse.”

Ryan played in all 18 games last year at the midfielder position, collecting 18 groundballs and causing 11 turnovers for the season. He added seven points on one goal and six assists.

“I’m very excited that our guys recognized the quiet leadership of a Jimmy Ryan,” Murphy said. “He epitomizes his class, and his work on and off the field is undoubtedly as hard as it gets. He’s also a great guy in the locker room, someone the guys can turn to when they have questions about school work, lacrosse or approaching the coaching staff.

“I’m very excited that these three guys will be leading us on and off the field during the 2013 campaign.”

Colgate plans to announce its 2013 schedule this week.
