Danger zone: Knighthawks roll past Rock, 12-5 in NLL action

Rochester Knighthawks vs. Toronto Rock

The Rochester Knighthawks (2-1) earned a weekend sweep by defeating the Toronto Rock (0-3) by a score of 12-5 in front of 8,365 fans at the Blue Cross Arena on Saturday night.

Colin Doyle got the Rock on the board with a goal on the power play with 7:33 left in the first quarter. Jordan Hall evened the score on the power play with 3:46 to go, then Doyle gave the Rock the lead back with 2:43 to go, his second of the night. The Rock carried that lead into the first intermission, but the Knighthawks would have time left over on the power play to start the second quarter.

Cody Jamieson tied the game up at 2 only 28 seconds into the second quarter to key a six-goal second quarter for the Knighthawks. Dan Dawson notched a hat trick with Joe Resetarits scoring in between Dawson’s first and second goal. Dawson’s second goal came with the Rock’s Brett Hickey in the box for a five-minute goalie interference major penalty which led to a bench minor penalty for the Rock. Then Dawson scored on the 5-on-3 advantage to cap off his hat trick.

Cory Vitarelli capped off the six-goal second with a diving buzzer-beater from the top of the crease, giving the Knighthawks a 7-2 lead at the half.

Dan Dawson picked up in the third where he left off, scoring twice to bring his total to five through three quarters. Brett Hickey got one back for the Rock between Dawson’s goal then Rob Hellyer brought the Rock back within five with under five minutes to go.

Jamieson scored his second of the night with 40 seconds to go in the third to give the Knighthawks the 10-4 lead they carried into the fourth quarter.

Stephen Keogh opened the scoring in the fourth quarter, adding his first goal to his six assists on the night. Joe Walters also got into the act with his first of the night to give the Knighthawks a 12-4 lead with just over seven minutes left in the game.

Hellyer notched his second goal of the game with just over five minutes left in the game to cut the lead to 12-5.
