Wildcats Announce 2016 Schedule in Quest of Eighth National Title

EVANSTON, Ill. — The seven-time national champion Northwestern Lacrosse program released its 2016 schedule Monday and once again will play one of the toughest schedules in the country with 12 games against teams that appeared in the NCAA Tournament a year ago, including three of the four that advanced to the final weekend of the season.

The Wildcats will face seven of the top 10 teams from the final RPI of last with seven matchups at the newly renovated Lanny & Sharon Martin Stadium.

Northwestern will host the second Big Ten Tournament at Lanny & Sharon Martin Stadium May 5-8.

“As always, we look forward to the challenge of a very competitive schedule,” said head coach Kelly Amonte Hiller. “We are so grateful to Mrs. And Mr. Martin for providing resources that will enhance the greatest home field advantage in college lacrosse.  Hosting this years Big Ten Tournament, will provide our fans the opportunity to witness the most compelling lacrosse in the country.”

The 2016 slate includes four-straight against ACC foes to open the season, home non-conference games against Marquette, Colorado, UNC, Notre Dame and USC and the Big Ten opener at Maryland.

Sunday, February 7 at Duke (11 a.m.): The #B1GCats open the season at 2015 semifinalist @Duke_WLAX looking to avenge a 15-9 loss season last season. NU is 12-3 all time vs. Duke.

Saturday, February 13 vs. Virginia (11 a.m.): For the 3rd-straight year, the #B1GCats will take on @UVAWomensLax in Kennesaw, Ga. NU’s 6-5 win last year was their 9th straight vs. UVA.

Sunday, February 28 at Syracuse (11 a.m.): #B1GCats travel to Carrier Dome on 2/28 to take on 2nd 2015 semifinalist in @CuseWLax. ‘Cats defeated Orange, 11-10, last year.

Thursday, March 3 at Louisville (11 a.m.): The ‘Cats will look to improve to 5-0 against @LouisvilleLax on 3/3. #B1GCats defeated Cards 2x in ’15, including in the NCAA Tourney.

Tuesday, March 8 vs. Marquette (3 p.m.): The #B1GCats battle Marquette on 3/8 in first game at newly renovated stadium. First of 4-straight at home for the ‘Cats.

Saturday, March 12 vs. Stony Brook (12 p.m.): After @StonyBrookWLAX claimed the 1st-ever meeting last year on home turf, the #B1GCats host the SeaWolve on 3/12. SB finished 18-2 in 2015.

Sunday March 20 vs. UNC (12 p.m.): 2015 Runner Up @uncwlax visits Evanston on 3/20. The #B1GCats are 11-5 all time against the Heels following back-and-forth 12-11 L last year

Thursday, March 24 vs. Colorado (6 p.m.): Former NU star Ann Elliott and her @CUBuffsWLax squad visit Evanston on 3/24. #B1GCats won 14-8 last year at home.

Thursday, March 31 at Maryland (6 p.m.): The #B1GCats travel to rival @MarylandWLax to open the 2016 #B1GLax campaign on 3/31. Terps are 2x defending champs and beat NU in QF in ’15

Sunday, April 3 at Penn (11 a.m.): #B1GCats wrap 2-game road swing on 4/3 at @PennWomensLax. Last year, Kaleigh Craig scored GW goal for ‘Cats’ 9th-straight W in the series.

Thursday, April 7 vs. Michigan (6 p.m.): The #B1GCats will welcome @umichwlax to Evanston for the first time on 4/7. NU has outscored Michigan 50-23 in first three meetings.

Sunday, April 10 vs. Notre Dame (1 p.m.): A 2015 NCAA Tourney rematch is on tap vs. @NDWomensLax in Evanston on 4/10. ‘Cats beat Notre Dame 2x last season, including 16-11 in 2nd Rd.

Friday, April 15 vs. USC (7 p.m.): 2015 #B1GCats H.O.F Inductee @LMunday01 and @USCTrojansLax visit NU on 4/15. Trojans advanced to 2nd Rd of 1st-ever NCAA Tournament in ’15.

Sunday, April 17 vs. Rutgers (12 p.m.): #B1GLax foe @rulaxbrand concludes the home schedule on 4/17. 12 different #B1GCats scored in a 18-6 win over the Knights last season.

Saturday, April 23 at Penn State (11 a.m.): #B1GCats will travel to 2015 NCAA quarterfinalist @PennStateWLAX on 4/23. ‘Cats had won 18 straight vs. PSU prior to last season.

Friday, April 29 at Ohio State (4 p.m.): The regular season concludes on 4/29 at @OhioState_WLAX. #B1GCats improve to 12-3 vs. Buckeyes last year with 16-6 win on Senior Day.
